Daphne: The Jubilee City
One of the world’s strangest natural events is the “Jubilee.” Along Daphne’s shore of Mobile Bay shrimp, crabs, flounders and other sea life crowd the beach in an effort to get oxygen, as the water is depleted of oxygen. Many theories abound as to what causes the jubilees to occur, but there has been little scientific research to provide a certain conclusion.
What is certain is that no one will ever forget their first Jubilee. Though the animals affected by the jubilee can differ, most will include crabs that will stack on top of each other or climb pilings in an effort to obtain oxygen.
Since it is so hard to describe, here is a video of a jubilee on one of our local beaches.
Daphne’s Housing Market
As I write this in November 2018, Realtor.com considers the housing market in Daphne to be a buyer’s market. That means there are more homes for sale than there are buyers searching for homes and this is good news for the buyer.
The current median asking price for a home in Daphne is $255,000 while the median selling price is $233,000. A year ago the median asking price was $240,000 while the median selling price was $226,000. That’s a difference in the selling price of about 3%.
The median asking price per square foot for a home in Daphne is currently $115.
